HL Deb 12 July 1993 vol 548 cc2-3WA
Lord Carver

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What reductions, under Options for Change, are being made in (a) 2 and 3-star posts in the Armed Forces, and (b) Assistant Under-Secretary and Deputy Under-Secretary civil service posts in the Ministry of Defence, its Procurement Executive and out-stations; and what proportion those reductions represent of the established numbers of each as at 1st July 1991.

Viscount Cranborne

In the period from 1st April 1990, the pre-Options for Change baseline, until 1st April 1993, the number of Service posts at 2-star level and above fell from 169 to 144 (15 per cent.) and of equivalent MoD civil service posts from 75 to 62 (17 per cent.) On current plans we expect that by the mid-1990s the number of Service and civilian posts at that level will have declined by 20 per cent. or more on the 1990 figures.
