§ Mr. BoothTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what proposals he has to recognise the requirement for long-term planning of urban regeneration.
229W
§ Mr. BaldryThe Government will continue to encourage and sustain long-term investment to improve the quality of life in our city areas, both through existing programmes and new initiatives. Urban development corporations will continue to attract private investment, which has so far totalled £12 billion. City challenge will continue to promote lasting regeneration and encourage partnership between central and local government, the private sector and local people. The Urban Regeneration Agency will draw together the present programmes of city grant, derelict land grant and English Estates to create a new unified approach to the regeneration of land in and around urban areas. All urban areas will benefit from substantial main programme spending.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) when the index of urban deprivation will now be published;
(2) if he will list each of his orginal and revised estimates of the date of the publication of the index of urban deprivation; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BaldryWe have made no formal estimates of the date of publication of the results of our analysis of 1991 census data. The precise timing will depend on the outcome of continuing consultation with the local authority associations and other bodies, and on the finalisation of indicators.
