HL Deb 08 July 1993 vol 547 c73WA
The Marquess of Ailesbury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether a motorist from another country in the European Community is permitted to drive in Britain if banned from doing so in his own country.

The Earl of Caithness

There is at present no system for recognition of driving disqualifications imposed elsewhere within the European Community. It is possible that a driver disqualified from driving in another member state would be able to drive in Great Britain. Similarly, a driver disqualified here would be able to drive abroad. Work has recently begun under European political co-operation in the Judicial Co-operation Working Group on Criminal Matters to explore the possibility of an agreement which would mean that a driver disqualified from driving in one EC member state would not be able to drive elsewhere in the Community.
