HC Deb 07 July 1993 vol 228 c160W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what is the current level of unemployment among manufacturing workers in Wales; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what is the current level of unemployment among workers in the service industries in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Redwood

Information is not available in the form requested. However, labour force surveys conducted between December 1992 and February 1993 reported that 20 per cent. of the 138,000 unemployed had a previous job in the manufacturing sector and 41 per cent. in the service sector. These percentages are likely to be underestimates, because 14 per cent. of unemployed respondents did not give a previous industry.

These figures are based on the International Labour Organisation definition of unemployment. Labour force survey estimates, being derived from a sample of the population, are subject to sampling variability.
