HC Deb 27 January 1993 vol 217 c730W
Mr. Fry

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will take steps to ensure a fairer international trade environment for the British and other European Community footwear manufacturing industries before the conclusion of the Uruguay round of GATT negotiations.

Mr. Needham

We and our Community partners fully support the objectives of the Uruguay round of multilateral trade negotiations in GATT, which include the specific aim of the reduction or elimination by all participants of high tariffs and non-tariff measures.

The European Commission negotiates for the Community in GATT. It has details of all the concerns expressed to us by the United Kingdom footwear industry, and these have been carefully taken into account in the formulation of the Community's position in the negotiations.
