Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, North (Ms. Walley),Official Report, 11 January, column 531, on what basis he described the quantities of plutonium exported, to which he refers, as small.

Individual shipments of radioactive material are not notifiable to the Department when transported in type B(U) packages containing an activity equal to or less than 3000 A1 or 3000 A2, as appropriate, or 1000 terabecquerels, whichever is the lower. The terms A1 and A2 are defined in the International Atomic Energy Agency regulations for the safe transport of radioactive material, a copy of which is available in the library of the House.
