HL Deb 26 January 1993 vol 541 cc89-90WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will work for the closer co-operation between the World Bank, IMF and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Republic of Macedonia; and whether de facto membership can be arranged for Macedonia in advance of international recognition.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

We have played an active role in seeking to promote early membership of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in international financial institutions. Membership of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be possible following the completion of certain obligations to the fund including clearance of its arrears. Membership of the IMF will open the way for membership of the World Bank, again subject to completion of certain formalities. It is in the process of joining the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
