To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the total number of hospital beds in the west midlands(a) in 1979 and (b) in the latest year for which figures are available.

Between 1979 and 1991–92 the number of patients treated in hospital in the west midlands increased by 55 per cent.; the number of day cases by 202 per cent. and the number of out-patients treated by 14.9 per cent.
