HL Deb 26 January 1993 vol 541 c91WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What percentage of the budget of the Department of Education went to its own centralised services in 1979, 1985 and in 1991.

The Minister of State, Department of Education (Baroness Blatch)

The figures below are drawn from the published appropriation accounts of the Department of Education and Science for the relevant years. The figures are rounded to the nearest million.

Central administration Total net expenditure Department of Education and Science Central administration expressed as a percentage of total
(£ million) (£ million)
1979–80 22 2,139 1.0
1985–86 52 3,031 1.7
1991–92 102 7,536 1.4

As a consequence of changes in the department's responsibilities between 1979 and 1991, the 1979–80 figures include expenditure on libraries, research councils, the arts and museums, and the 1985–86 figures include expenditure on research councils.

No expenditure on these services is included in the 1991–92 figures, which however include expenditure on sport (not included in the earlier years).
