§ Mr. LlwydTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make it his policy to make representations to the European Community to enable exemptions to be granted to charities from the provisions of the current European Community directive on processing of personal data.
§ Mr. JackThe Government are seeking, in discussion with their European Community partners, to ensure that the directive makes proper allowance for the needs of charities and other data users, and does not go beyond the 1981 Council of Europe convention on data processing on which the Data Protection Act 1984 is based.
