HC Deb 22 January 1993 vol 217 cc441-2W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of people aged 16 and 17 years in Birmingham are(a) on a youth training scheme, (b) in full-time education and (c) in employment.

Mr. McLoughlin

A total of 20.6 per cent. of people aged 16 and 17 years are currently on a YT scheme in Birmingham. 54.1 per cent. are in full-time education and 24.8 per cent. are in employment.

Mr. McLoughlin

The labour force survey provides estimates by occupation according to the standard occupational classification in which social workers are grouped with probation officers. The numbers in employment in this group in spring 1991, spring 1992 and summer 1992 were estimated respectively to be 96,000, 125,000 and 125,000, not seasonally adjusted.

Estimates at these periods for the numbers previously employed in this group who were unemployed, according to the International Labour Organisation definition, are all below 10,000. No comparable information for this occupational group is available for earlier years.
