To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what are his Department's plans for the future of TVEI and its future funding.

The technical and vocational education initiative is a 10–year programme, running from 1987 to 1997, in which education authorities participate for up to seven years. The Department is working closely with authorities on the development of their plans for assimilating the lessons of TVEI as they leave the programme. The impetus of the initiative will be further carried forward through the implementation of the national curriculum, the introduction of general national vocational qualifications and the impact of training and enterprise councils on education.
