To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of motorway there are in the United Kingdom and what percentage is illuminated by overhead lights.

[holding answer 21 January 1993]: There are 1,996 miles of motorway in the United Kingdom of which 1,692 miles are in England. Approximately 30 per cent. of the length of motorway in England is lit.
