HC Deb 18 January 1993 vol 217 c43W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a further statement on his discussions with the Government of the Republic of Ireland concerning the use of lethal force by the security forces in Northern Ireland, following the verdict of the jury in the inquest into the death of Seamus McElwaine.

Mr. Mates

A range of security-related issues, including the use of force by the security forces in Northern Ireland, is regularly discussed with the Irish Government at meetings of the intergovernmental conference.

Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps he is taking to deal with the issues raised by the verdict of the jury in the inquest into the death of Seamus McElwaine.

Mr. Mates

The Director of Public Prosecutions for Northern Ireland, who is the holder of an independent statutory office, has asked for a full report from the police in the light of the inquest jury's findings. It would therefore be inappropriate for me to comment further.
