asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the total cost in 1991 of running:

  1. (a) the House of Commons;
  2. (b) the House of Lords; and
  3. (c) the European Parliament.

In financial year 1991–92 net expenditure on House of Commons administration, Members' salaries and printing and stationery supplies was £115,846,000. Net expenditure on House of Lords administration, Peers' expenses and printing and stationery supplies was £23,005,000. The cost of accommodation and works services borne on the Department of the Environment vote on behalf of both Houses of Parliament was £35,989,000. The outturn figure in the European Community budget covering expenditure by the European Parliament in 1991 totalled 488,691,650 ecu (£390,172,970 @ £1 = 1.2525 ecu).
