HL Deb 18 January 1993 vol 541 cc57-8WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people throughout Bosnia-Hercegovina they estimate will die this winter of cold, hunger, disease and military action and how many will become refugees or displaced, if the present level of fighting and sectarian attacks continues.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has estimated that hundreds of thousands are at risk this winter in Bosnia. Given the unpredictable nature of the conflict in Bosnia, it is not possible to estimate the likely number of deaths from whatever cause, nor how many more people will be displaced.
