HC Deb 15 January 1993 vol 216 c855W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he had with his Argentine counterpart on the prospects of Argentina joining the nuclear non-proliferation treaty during his recent visit.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and his Argentine counterpart discussed a number of non-proliferation issues, in particular the importance of bringing into effect as soon as possible the treaty of Tlatelolco which will create a nuclear weapons-free zone in Latin America. This is a vital agreement for the security of the region, and we consider it a step towards accession to the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
