HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 c632W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will consult the nuclear installations inspectorate before taking a decision on the siting of the facilities for the refitting of Trident submarines.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Consultation with the nuclear installations inspectorate on the reprovision of facilities for refitting nuclear submarines will take place once a decision has been taken on where the facilities should be sited and when a licencing application has been formally submitted.

Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether the proposals from Devonport Management Ltd. for the upgrading of existing facilities at Devonport dockyard for the refitting of Trident submarines have been approved by the nuclear installations inspectorate.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Neither the proposal made by Devonport Management Limited or that by Babcock Thorn Limited for provision of Trident facilities at Devonport or Rosyth have yet been formally submitted for approval by the nuclear installations inspectorate, nor would we expect them to be submitted until such time as a final decision is made on the future venue for refitting of nuclear submarines.
