HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 c623W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make representations to the European Commission to make supervision of welfare standards in Spanish slaughterhouses more effective.

Mr. Soames

The Commission's attention is drawn to any evidence of contraventions of Community animal welfare legislation in other member states.

Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he has taken to ensure that British live animal exports to Spanish slaughterhouses meet all current standards on transport and slaughter regulations in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Soames

All member states are required to implement directive 91/628/EEC on the protection of animals in transport and directive 74/577/EEC on the humane slaughter of animals. As announced in the reply given to my hon Friend the Member for Taunton (Mr. Nicholson) on 16 December, specific safeguards have been agreed with the Spanish authorities for ensuring that animals exported for slaughter in Spain are slaughtered in accordance with Community welfare legislation.
