HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 cc632-3W
Peter Atkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many jobs are directly and indirectly dependent on the Otterburn camp.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Some 143 civilian (including 15 seasonal casual) posts and six military posts are directly dependent on the Otterburn training area. A further eight civilians are employed by contractors, and there are 76 adult civilians on tenanted farms.

Mr. Peter Atkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans his Department has to upgrade existing roads in the Otterburn camp to cope with increased activity.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

While there are no plans to upgrade roads within Otterburn camp itself my Department is considering a number of options for the roads in the training area as a whole. It is too early to say what our eventual requirements will be, but we will be consulting the Northumberland national park authority on these.
