To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what additional resources he is making available to his Department's radiobiology laboratories to assess radioactive contamination in the Irish sea.

In the present financial year, planned expenditure on scientific and technical work directly in support of the Ministry's statutory responsibilities for regulating discharges from nuclear installations is £2.6 million. In addition we shall have spent approximately £1.4 million on studies related to the behaviour of radioactivity in the Irish sea. We shall continue to fund the scientific and technical work necessary to support our responsibilities for the protection of the marine environment, fisheries and the marine food chain.
