In what circumstances can a Commonwealth citizen become a citizen entitled to permanent residence in the United Kingdom.

The circumstances in which a Commonwealth citizen, who does not have the right of abode in the United Kingdom, may become entitled to permanent residence in the United Kingdom are set out in paragraphs 49–60 and paragraph 139 of the Immigration Rules (HC251), a copy of which is available in the Library.

In order to qualify for naturalisation as a British citizen a person must meet the requirements set out in Schedule 1 to the British Nationality Act 1981.
