To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 9 February,Official Report, column 575, what was the total bill for redundancy payments paid to the service personnel who left the armed forces on or before 31 December 1992 as a result of "Options for Change".

Expenditure up to 31 December 1992 on special capital payments to personnel who left the services on redundancy terms under "Options for Change" was £83.743 million. In addition, these personnel qualified for immediate terminal grants and pensions/retired pay which would normally have become payable on completion of their engagements/commissions. Up to 31 December 1992 expenditure on terminal grants was £64–647 million and on pensions/retired pay, including lump sum commutation payments, was £46.037 million.
