To ask the Secretary of State for Education (1) if he will give the figures for the average size of all classes in primary schools in England for each year since 1984;

(2) if he will give the figures for the average size of class taught by one teacher in primary schools in England for each year since 1983.

Information about class sizes in maintained primary schools in England for years 1983 to 1992 is given in the table.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will give the figures for the percentage of classes taught by one teacher with a class size of over 30 pupils in England in 1991.

The percentages of classes with more than 30 pupils being taught by one teacher in maintained primary and secondary schools in England in January 1991 were 20 per cent. and 4 per cent. respectively.
