HL Deb 24 February 1993 vol 543 c15WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether dismantling nuclear weapons, and thereby producing highly enriched uranium and plutonium, is the safest way of making nuclear warheads inoperable.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

We believe that the dismantling of nuclear warheads is a sure and safe method of making them inoperable. However, it is essential that the recovered highly enriched uranium and plutonium are stored in safe and secure facilities.
