HC Deb 22 February 1993 vol 219 cc463-4W
Mr. Tyler

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his latest estimate of the number and percentage of cereal farmers in each EC member state who will have to place land in set-aside.

Mr. Curry

The information in the following table is derived from budgetary estimates of expenditure on the CAP reform package prepared by the Commission. The estimates do not distinguish between cereals farmers and those growing oilseeds or protein crops, both of which are also covered by the arable area payments scheme.

Country Number of growers expected to set land aside Percentage of growers expected to set land aside
Belgium 7,644 16
Denmark 37,770 46
Germany 105,474 21
Greece 4,378 1
Spain 58,169 8
France 202,744 34
Ireland 6,285 15
Italy 34,210 3
Luxembourg 256 10
Netherlands 6,068 26
Portugal 2,349 1
United Kingdom 50,363 63
Total 515,710 12

Mr. Tyler

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the likely acreage for set-aside for cereal land in each EC member state under the common agricultural policy reform proposals.

Mr. Curry

I refer the hon. Member to my reply of 14 December 1992 at column70. That information was derived from Commission estimates which do not distinguish between land used to grow cereals and land used for other arable crops eligible for the new arable area payments.
