HC Deb 22 February 1993 vol 219 c441W
17. Mr. Enright

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what proposals he has made to remove restrictions placed on Rugby League players; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

As the hon. Member will be aware, sports organisations in this country are independent bodies which are free to lay down their own rules and regulations.I therefore have no plans to intervene in this matter. However I welcome the recent introduction of the 'free gangway" system which allows rugby players to play both codes at amateur level and for clubs to share facilities, and hope that rugby authorities will do their utmost to ensure its effective implementation.
