To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police retired on sickness grounds while disciplinary action involving them was under consideration in the most recent year for which the information is available.

In 1991, 19 police officers retired after disciplinary charges had been brought against them, but before those charges had been heard. It is not known how many of those retirements were on medical grounds; nor is it known how many officers retired while disciplinary action was under consideration but before charges had been brought.
