To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the capital expenditure of British Rail annually from 1979 on(a) asset replacement, (b) new capital schemes and (c) other capital expenditure.

This information is not available in the form requested. However, a breakdown of investment between 1979 and 1991–92 is provided in the table.

Notes:

1. Figures exclude changes in advance payments on rolling stock orders.

2. Infrastructure Revenue Investment is expenditure on infrastructure renewal charged to profit and loss account, exclusive of track renewals.

3. Other non-rail figures for 1979 and 1980 exclude ships, harbours, hovercraft and hotels.

4. Figures rounded to nearest million.
