To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prison officers are employed in prisons within which the prisoners are of the opposite sex.

[holding answer 17 February 1993]: This month there are approximately 70 female officers in uniformed grades in male prison establishments and 24 male uniformed staff at the women's prison in Cornton Vale.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prison officers now wear name badges; and when the staff in all the prisons will be required to wear name badges.

[holding answer 17 February 1993]: Staff in all Scottish prisons are required to wear name badges and are now doing so. Particular exceptions can however be made where wearing name badges would jeopardise staff safety.
