§ Mr. IngramTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give details of the state aid to the energy sector within Scotland as notified to the European Commission.
§ Mr. Allan Stewart[holding answer 15 February 1993]: A Debt Extinguishment Order was laid before Parliament on 9 March 1990, extinguishing £1,368 million of debt in Scottish Nuclear Ltd. The company was also provided with financial assurances by the Government, to enable it to meet its liabilities from the resources it inherited, under schedule 12 of the Electricity Act 1989. This schedule 12 agreement, for a total of £716 million, was announced on 4 April 1990 by means of a written answer.
The amount of debt in Scottish Power and Scottish Hydro-Electric written off in net terms by the Government amounted to £418 million.
The above matters were notified to the European Commission.
