§ Mrs. Anne CampbellTo ask the Secretary of State for Education, pursuant to his answer of 28 January,Official Report, column 807, what estimate he has made of the total number of places in secondary schools in England and Wales, the number he now believes are surplus to requirements and the number of the total, actual or estimated, that are currently located in temporary or mobile accommodation and the numbers located in laboratories, workshops or other specialist teaching space as defined in departmental circular 11/88 of 1988.
§ Mr. ForthQuestions about the level of surplus places in Welsh secondary schools are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales. On the basis of the Department's survey of school capacity, we estimate that in 1991 there were some 3.5 million secondary school places in England, of which up to210W 700,000 were surplus, although not all of these are practicably removable. It is not possible to say how many secondary school places were, or are, located in temporary or mobile accommodation, laboratories, workshops or other specialist teaching spaces.
