To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many attempted suicides took place in prisons in England and Wales in 1992.

[holding answer 13 January 1993]: There were 2,920 incidents of deliberate self harm by prisoners in prisons in England and Wales in 1992. No distinction is made according to the degree of apparent suicidal intent.
