128. Mr. Heppell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will set out the full proposed timetable for the second tranche of the work of the Local Government Commission;

(2) what steps he is taking to ensure that all local authorities are given adequate advance warning of the start time of the local government review in their area;

(3) if he will make it his policy not to require the Local Government Commission to begin any review in the period immediately before or immediately after the 1993 local elections.

Mr. Robin Squire

In reply to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for the Isle of Wight (Mr. Field), my

Mr. Robin Squire

This Department has provided the following inner cities grants to Coventry in the last five years:

hon. Friend the Minister of State for Local Government and Inner Cities announced on 4 February the timetable for the Local Government Commission's second tranche reviews, and placed a copy in the House Library.

All local authorities in the areas in the second tranche were sent a copy of the announcement, together with the timetable. This gives them a minimum of three months to prepare their initial submissions to the commission.

The Secretary of State intends to direct the commission to begin the first review in the second tranche on 10 May 1993, immediately after the county council elections. There is no need to delay the beginning of the reviews any further.
