To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what initiatives he will take to boost energy conservation in Wales.

I have already taken several initiatives to encourage the efficient use of energy. In December 1991 I launched the "Energy Plan for Wales for the 1990s", which outlines our approach to energy conservation. A copy has been placed in the Library of the House. At the same time I wrote to all local authorities stressing the importance of energy conservation.

Very recently I have supplemented this initiative by joining the corporate commitment campaign started by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment. This campaign is aimed at top management of both the commercial and public sectors. I myself signed the commitment on behalf of the Welsh Office last December. Details of this campaign have also been placed in the Library of the House.

My officals are at present very active in promulgating this message throughout Wales.
