Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his answer of 8 February,Official Report, column 418, if he will make a statement as to the implications for Northern Ireland of clause 132(3) of the Railways Bill.

Mr. Freeman

The implications for Northern Ireland of section 132(3) of the Railways Bill are minimal. The main provisions of part I of the Railways Bill do not extend to Northern Ireland. The restructuring provisions in part II and associated provisions in part III, which apply to the British Railways Board, are extended to Northern Ireland to enable the board to deal with any property, rights and liabilities it may have in Northern Ireland. Other provisions extend to Northern Ireland where they amend legislation which so extends.
