HC Deb 16 February 1993 vol 219 cc175-6W
Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the change in the value of manufacturing(a) production, (b) employment and (c) investment in Wales from 1979–80 to 1991–92, in money and percentage terms after allowing for inflation.

Mr. David Hunt

Changes in manufacturing production are best measured by the Welsh index of production. Average quarterly manufacturing output rose by 23.9 per cent, between 1979–80 and 1991–92. The index of manufacturing production in the third quarter of 1992 stood at 126.3. The comparable figure for 1979 was 100.7.

The average number of employees employed in manufacturing fell by 91,000, 29 per cent., between 1979–80 and 1991–92. The estimated income from employment in manufacturing in Wales in 1979 was £1,728 million and in 1991 was £3,639 million, a rise of 110.6 per cent. Regional deflators are not available.

The available information on gross domestic fixed capital formation in Wales, by industry, was published by the Central Statistical Office in "Economic Trends No. 470, December 1992", which is available from the Library of the House.
