HL Deb 16 February 1993 vol 542 c70WA
Lord Trefgarne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What would be the cost, at today's prices, of increasing the authorised manpower ceiling of the British Army by 7,000.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

The personnel cost of manning an increase in the authorised manpower ceiling of the British Army of 7,000, including associated trainees, would be some £180 million per annum. This does not take into account the extra costs associated with equipment, training, accommodation and utilities, but this would depend on the way in which the additional manpower was to be deployed.
