To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people have been employed in public transport in Wales in each year since 1979 by(a) bus services, (b) train services and (c) other.

Levels of employment in public transport' in Wales are given in the following table. Figures are available only for years when a census of employment was carried out and the results prior to 1981 are not comparable with later years. Separate figures for road and rail services are not available.

Information on the numbers of bus and train services in Wales is not available. The numbers of vehicle kilometres covered by local (stage) bus services for each year since 1982 are given in the following table:
