HC Deb 15 February 1993 vol 219 c100W
Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people are currently estimated to be receiving income support; what is the total cost to the Exchequer; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Burt

It is estimated that for 1992–93 there are 5.3 million claims for income support at a total benefit cost of £14.5 billion. This level of expenditure demonstrates our commitment to protect those on a low income.
