To ask the Secretary of State for Health what representations she has made to the EC Social Affairs Committee concerning the reduction in funding of the HELIOS programme.

Mr. Yeo

There has been no reduction. The first HELIOS programme finished in December 1991 and discussions on the second programme, including its overall budget, are continuing. The European Commission originally requested 5.6 million ecus for the second HELIOS programme in 1993. The Council has put that sum in reserve, at the request of the European Parliament.
