To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will make it his policy to encourage reading among young people.

This is already an essential element of our policy. The current review of national curriculum English, on which the National Curriculum Council is expected to report soon, has been addressing the need to ensure that pupils are encouraged to develop the habit of reading widely, and are introduced to the richness of great literature.
