To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what percentage of pensioners had an income of less than £5,000 a year, at the latest available date.

[pursuant to her reply, 11 January 1993, c. 675]: The following information was incorrect. 'It is estimated1 that 61 per cent. of single pensioners2 had an income of less than £5,000 per year in 1988 (the latest available date).'

The correct information is as follows: 'It is estimated1 that 61 per cent. of pensioners2 had an income of less than £5,000 per year in 1988 (the latest available date)'.

Notes: 1 Family Expenditure Survey 1988. 2 Based on pensioner units—ie single people over state pension age and couples where the husband is aged 65 or over, regardless of whether they are drawing state pension.
