§ Mr. DafisTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what processes are employed by the Overseas Development Administration in seeking to assess and minimise the environmental impacts of adjustment lending.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydWe welcome the recognition that the multilateral institutions which are responsible for structural adjustment lending are giving to assessing the724W likely environmental consequences of such programmes and the assistance to developing countries to apply policies conducive to the protection of the environment. We support the World bank's position that more work needs to be done to identify the environmental impacts of adjustment lending. Where we are directly involved in adjustment programmes the processes set out in ODA's "Manual of Environmental Appraisal" apply, a copy of which is in the Library of the House.
