HC Deb 10 February 1993 vol 218 c677W
30. Mr. Fisher

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has to meet the Turkish ambassador to discuss human and civil rights in Turkey.

Mr. Garel-Jones

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs has no plans for such a meeting.

We have been in regular contact with the Turkish Government on the subject of human rights.

The issue was most recently discussed during the visit to the United Kingdom of the Turkish Prime Minister in November. During the visit Mr Demirel reiterated his Government's commitment to its programme of reforms which aims at improving human rights and increasing democratisation in the country.

We welcome this clear commitment to human rights by the Turkish Government and look forward to the implementation of their programme.
