HC Deb 10 February 1993 vol 218 cc674-5W
18. Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to persuade the United Nations to lift sanctions against Iraq.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

There can be no question of lifting sanctions against Iraq at present. Iraq is not in compliance with its obligations under all relevant United Nations resolutions.

20. Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what are his current plans to place the Iraqi question before the United Nations Security Council; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The Security Council frequently discusses Iraq, both in formal and informal sessions. On 25 January the Security Council concluded that there was no basis for the lifting of economic sanctions. Discussions are continuing on the Secretary-General's proposals for the reinforcement of the United Nations Iraq/Kuwait observer mission.

28. Mr. Connarty

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what communications or other approaches on the recent attack on Iraq he has had from countries which formed the UN alliance during the Gulf war, other than the USA and France; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We are in close touch with our coalition partners. My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister discussed Iraq with the Sultan of Oman and King Fand during his recent visit to the Gulf.
