HC Deb 09 February 1993 vol 218 c539W
Mrs. Lait

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many pensioners pay income tax; how many pay at 40 per cent; and how much is raised in direct taxation from pensioners' incomes.

Mr. Dorrell

It is estimated that, in 1992–93, 2.9 million individuals aged 65 or over will be liable to income tax. Of these 0.1 million will be liable at the higher rate. The total income tax liability of people aged 65 or over is estimated to be just over £5 billion.
