HC Deb 04 February 1993 vol 218 cc259-60W
Mr. Cummings

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is his most recent estimate of the contribution made by the United Kingdom tobacco industry towards the United Kingdom balance of payments.

Mr. Needham

The United Kingdom had a crude trade surplus1 in manufactured tobacco products2 worth £614.9 million in 1991 and £727.4 million in January to November 1992.

1. Crude trade surplus = exports (fob) less imports (cif).

2. Manufactured tobacco products are defined as heading 122 of the Standard International Trade Classification (revision 3).
