The figures include those deaths coded to the World Health Organisation International Classification of Diseases (9th Revision) codes 800–804 and 850–854. The General Register Office for Scotland uses only a restricted code list for nature-of-injury codes. Deaths from head injuries classified to ICD 9 codes such as 870–904 (laceration and open wound) and 910–929 (superficial injury, contusion and crushing with intact skin surface) are not included, but are likely to be few in number.
