Mr. Norris

I will write to the hon. Member.

Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many United Kingdom registered vessels had crews of which(a) over 25 per cent. and (b) over 50 per cent. were non-EC nationals in each year since 1979.

Mr. Norris

This information is not available.

Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give details for each of the last five years of the number of port state control inspections of(a) British registered ships, and the percentage of those failing to meet safety standards and (b) foreign ships, with the percentage of all foreign ships entering United Kingdom ports that figure represents, and the percentage of those failing to meet safety standards.

Mr. Norris

The number of inspections of British-registered ships (excluding fishing vessels), and the percentage of those detained for failing to meet safety standards, for each of the last five financial years is as follows:

Year Number Percentage detained
19871 1,086 0.8
1988–89 956 0.2
1989–90 23,894 0.2
1990–91 3,414 0.2
1991–92 3,954 0.2
1 Calendar year.
2 Following the Marchioness disaster it was decided to both increase numbers of inspections of United Kingdom ships and revise the statistical basis of their calculation. The figure for 1989–90 onwards reflects this change in policy.

The number of port state control inspections of foreign registered ships, the percentage of all foreign registered ships entering the United Kingdom that this represents, and the percentage of those detained for failing to meet safety standards, for each of the last five financial years is as follows:

Year Number Percentage inspected Percentage detained
1987–88 2,188 34.0 0.8
1988–89 1,830 29.7 2.5
1989–90 1,783 27.7 3.0
1990–91 2,197 31.1 3.8
1991–92 2,397 133.8 5.3
1 Provisional figure.
